National Lottery awards £3.5m for castle improvements

Champagne corks are popping after funding of £3.5m was awarded by the National Lottery for a wide range of improvements to the Castle Grounds.

The Hertford Castle Greenspace Renewal (HCGR) project will transform the castle grounds with a new play area, improved access, and restoration of the riverbanks and historic features.

The plans include:

  • Conservation of the motte, curtain wall, icehouse and other historic features.
  • Restoration of the River Lea’s riverbanks and improved wildlife habitats.
  • A complete redesign and relocation of the children’s play area.
  • Improved access through upgraded paths, bridges and step-free routes.
  • Sensitive improvements to the Ashley Webb Shelter.
  • New and improved seating across the site.
  • Enhanced planting and biodiversity to support wildlife.
  • New interpretation, signage and heritage information.

Councillor Alex Daar, Leader of Hertford Town Council commented: "The Council is delighted that the Hertford Castle Greenspace Renewal Project has made such a considerable step forward. The Council is proud to continue to support the project as it now moves from its 18-month development phase, into the delivery phase. The project team have been diligently preparing the application to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and it’s so wonderful that this has been recognised with this monumental investment in our town."

Councillor Ann Woodward, Chair of the Development and Leisure Committee said: "Hertford Town Council and its partners have been listening to the views of our community to shape the plans for the grounds of Hertford Castle – the much-loved greenspace in the very heart of our wonderful town. The site, so steeped in history and heritage, is a rich habitat for wildlife, host to the River Lea and a haven of natural beauty. This investment will improve the site in so many ways, for the benefit of all - for generations to come."

Liz Bates, Director, England, Midlands & East at The National Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "We are pleased to award Hertford Town Council with a grant of £3.5million for its ambitious plans to renew Hertford Castle’s grounds and green spaces. Thanks to National Lottery players, this funding will significantly improve the Castle’s outdoor spaces, ensuring a more welcoming environment for visitors, and enhancing biodiversity to support local wildlife. A new programme of community activities and events will ensure that visitors of all ages will find a renewed appreciation for this important heritage site."

Now funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund has been confirmed, further planning and preparation for the project will continue over the next year, with improvement works expected to take place throughout 2028 and 2029.
