Bus fare cap to stay at £2 until end of 2024
The £2 cap on bus fares in the county will continue until the end of 2024, the government has announced.
The £2 fare cap was originally planned to run between January and March 2023, but was later extended until 30th June and then again until 31st October 2023. It has now been extended again until the end of 2024.
The flat rate cap only applies to single bus journeys at any time of day. Return journeys continue to be charged at their usual price, so passengers are advised to check if it's cheaper to buy single tickets instead.
The cap had also been due to rise to £2.50 from 1st November 2023 but this rise has now been cancelled.
Funds released by the cancellation of the HS2 Phase 2 link between Birmingham and Manchester will pay for the measure.
The fare cap will be reviewed once more closer to its revised end date.
