Sele town councillors resign

Sunday 11 May 2025

Two of the three Labour councillors representing Sele Ward have resigned from Hertford Town Council.

Mark Levermore and long-standing councillor Carolyn Redfern have both announced they will be standing down, creating two vacancies on the 16-member council and the prospect of two by-elections.

Cllr Redfern said: "I would like to make it very clear that I have resigned from Hertford Town Council for purely personal and family reasons. I will remain as a district councillor for the rest of my term.

"I have chosen to resign now because the officers at the town council are drawing up new committees for the next mayoral year and this seemed the right moment.

"I remain a loyal member of the Labour Party and will continue to fulfil my responsibilities both as a Labour member and an elected councillor to the best of my ability."

Cllr. Redfern will continue to serve as a District Councillor.

Labour group leader on the district council, Cllr David Jacobs, said: "Being a councillor is a demanding and time-consuming role and the residents of Hertford deserve councillors who are able to give the job their complete commitment.

"Unfortunately, due to changes in personal circumstances, Carolyn and Mark have found themselves no longer able to make this commitment and have taken the difficult decision to stand down."
