Government Cuts To Hit Council

Friday 2 July 2010

East Herts District Council is to issue it's own emergency budget in September after the government withdrew £782,000 of grants.

The council has a medium term financial plan which will be updated as further information on spending cuts are revealed. A report on how the loss of grant might be managed is expected to go before councillors in September.

Council Leader Tony Jackson said: "We will have to revisit current assumptions about the level of support from central government in future years.

"However it is already clear that we will have limited scope to defer some, if any, of the less welcome measures already set out in future years and the likelihood is further savings will be required."

The impact at East Herts Council is mostly made up of £166,000 loss of Housing and Planning Delivery Grant and a Local Area Agreement Performance Reward Grant worth £566,000.

The cuts could hasten the introdction of on-street parking charges in Hertford and could also see a reduction in car park recycling facilities.
