Public artwork unveiled

Wednesday 6 November 2013

A public art installation has been unveiled at the "Hartham Gateway" adjacent to Sainsbury's.

Designed by Karen Murphy and Leiselle Bristow, the installation has been paid for by Sainsbury's and celebrates the work of Alfred Russell Wallace, who independently conceived the theory of evolution, with his work being published with some of Charles Darwin's writings in 1858.

The work consists of a spiral walk, paved with the bottoms of recycled McMullens beer bottles set in to concrete, whilst a screen of metal and glass panels creates a see-through relief depicting the town's history and how man's evolution has changed it.
