Local Plan Approved

East herts District Council has voted to adopt policies that will guide planning decisions until 2033 following a meeting at the District HQ at Wallfields this evening.

The plan could see over 1000 new homes built in Hertford, over 700 of them on land that was previously green belt.

The former gasworks on Mead Lane is earmarked for at least 200 new homes, with developers suggesting that over 400 new homes could be built.

To the west of the town, Archers Spring and fields bordering Thieves Lane are expected to accomodate over 550 new homes.

In Bengeo, developers are planning news homes on the old Bengeo Nursery site - earmarked for 150 new homes in the plan; whilst land in Magrove Road could see 50 new homes.

The controversial plan was recently put on hold after Secretary Of State James Brockenshire was asked to intervene by Stevenage MP Stephen McPartland and the Hertfordshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural (CPRE). However, the housing secretary said he was satisfied that the approach to the plan was 'consistent with the relevant national policy' and lifted the holding order earlier in the month.
