Town centre development takes shape after six years
The final build of the Bircherley Green redevelopment is now under way on the corner of Railway Street and Bircherley Street in the town centre.
Plans for 34 retirement homes on the site were given the go-ahead last summer after a government inspector allowed an appeal by Churchill Retirement Living Ltd against the refusal of planning permission by East Herts Council.
The development also includes three retail units - the same number as were lost before demolition of the earlier buildings on the site in Autumn 2018.
Construction work started in March after contractors finished site clearance, with much of ground floor brickwork now beginning to rise above the hoardings.
According to the company's website, "The new development will bring a thriving new community to the heart of town, contributing around £260k a year to the local economy and supporting up to 64 jobs both during and after construction."

The development also includes 11 car parking spaces, communal facilities and landscaping.
