Council approves fishmonger's yarn display

East Herts Council have approved a planning application by local fishmongers The Blue Oyster Bar to regularise a colourful yarn display. 

Business owner Glenn Graney bought the colourful undersea characters at a charity auction held by the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters after it featured in a display in Parliament Square in the Summer. 

The yarn sea creatures were then attached to the front of Mr.Graney's fish shop and restaurant.

Following concerns about safety and the impact of the town centre conservation zone, the council asked Mr.Grabey to remove the display from the front of the building. The move by the council received coverage in the national press and the authority was widey ridiculed.

Mr.Graney subsequently applied for planning permission for a temporary art installation at the end of January.

East Herts Council have now granted planning permission for the display to remain for 12 months, despite objections from Hertford Town Council.

The planning officer's report states: "The installation adds significant interest to the Town Centre and is an unusual feature that draws attention. This cannot be objected to, as it aids in the securement of the viability and vitality of the Town Centre."

Mr Graney said: "I'm relieved. It's one of those things that was taking over and I wasn't sure what the council would do.

"With the restaurant open, it's going to look great in the summer."
