Police investigate after cricket pavilion set alight

Friday 11 August 2023

Police are investigating after a cricket pavilion was set alight on Tuesday morning (8th August).

The disused pavilion had been boarded up for some time

Emergency services attended the fire in the grounds of County Hall on Tuesday morning, with the building sustaining significant damaged.

Fire services later returned to the scene after the fire reignited. Herts Fire Control later Tweeted: "Hertford have been back to Bullocks Lane following a reignition of the Cricket Pavilion. A main jet was used to put out the fire and dampen down hot spots."

Fire officers determined that the fire was started deliberately and police are now investigating.

Hertfordshire County Council's Executive Member for Resources, Cllr Bob Deering, said: "Mercifully no one was injured in this unfortunate incident and we are very grateful to the Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service who did a great job dealing with the fire."

"The whole of the Leahoe site including the sports pavilion – but excluding the cricket field which will remain unchanged - is scheduled for development and we will ensure the site is secure in the meantime."
