Fore Street set to reopen next week

Saturday 17 June 2023

Herts Council Council have issued an update on works in Fore Street after a sink hole developed outside the Dog & Whistle pub, leading to the full closure of the road.

The sink hole was first reported late on Sunday afternoon (11th June) following which Herts Highway filled the hole with tarmac as a temporary safety measure before fully closing Fore Street the following day.

Subsequent investigation has revealed a disused Victorian sewer beneath the road, which has collapsed and thereby created a void in the underlying ground.

The closure of Fore Street has necessitated the temporary reopening of the western end of the street to allow access to Folly Island and deliveries to businesses.

Repairs have now taken place using modern materials and it is expoected that the road will open early next week.

In an update, the councty council said: "Permanent repairs have been undertaken in coordination with two water utility companies. Our hope is to re-open Fore Street early next week when we have been able to confirm that these works have been successful. Once this has been confirmed we will re-close Parliament Square. You may notice that there are no operatives on site over the weekend this is because the concrete that has been used to repair the defect is setting, therefore there is no need for them to be there. Water supply in the area is unaffected."
