Bollards installed to combat illegal parking

Locking bollards have been installed at the entrance to Green Street to prevent illegal parking.

The measure has been put in place by East Herts District Council following over nine months of complaints about motorists obstructing the pedestrian area.

The bollards were installed on Friday (18th February)  and feature a locking mechanism so that the bollards can be lowered for delivering or market traders.

Green Street is a pedestrian zone, along with a short length of Railway Street between Market Street and Salisbury Square.

Parking Attendants have been unable to issue tickets due to lack of an enforceable Traffic Regulation Order. Posting on social media, the council said: "Unfortunately there is no easy solution due to how restrictions were implemented many years ago."

Illegally parked vehicles are an obstruction for pedestrians as well as a hazard for the blind and partially sighted. The pedestrian surface is also not designed to carry the weight of vehicles.
