Barriers to prevent illegal parking

Friday 4 February 2022

East Herts Council are to install bollards at the entrance to Green Street in the town centre to prevent illegal parking.

Recent months have seen an increase in the number of illegally parked vehicles in the pedestrainised area, with some local inhabitants placing cones across the street.

Despite Green Street being a designated Pedestrian Zone, Parking Attendants have not been authorised to penalise motorists.

Green Street is a designated pedestrian zone

In a statement issued on social media, the council said: "We know many of you have raised concerns about parked cars on pedestrianised areas of Bircherley Green in Hertford town centre. Unfortunately there is no easy solution due to how restrictions were implemented many years ago.

"To prevent unauthorised vehicle access, we will be installing removable bollards across the frontage of the red paved area as a temporary measure.

"Working with Hertfordshire County Council we are on track to install these before the end of February."

The problems in Green Street are similar to those recently,  seen in Maidenhead Street, where it took over 18 months to authorise enforcement of the pedestrian zone.
