Hartham Rally draws hundreds

A gathering on Hartham common saw hundreds attend in support of Black Lives Matter this afternoon (Wednesday 17th June).

The two-hour peaceful protest was organised by Herts Black Lives Matter and included speeches and performances by black artists. 

A small number of police were on hand to ensure the event passed off peacefully, with a presence also seen around the town and at railway stations.

Local residents of all ages joined the rally, with social distancing clearly taking place.

Police estimated attendance to be around 250 but other estimates were double that figure.

Speakers included Josh Dean, Jess Murrain, Mark Franklin and Aimee Louise Ling, who spoke about the ongoing controvery over Grenfall Tower.

Protesters were socially distanced

Local campaigner Josh Dean commented: "The Herts BLM showcase was an amazing event with a real sense of community and responsibility from those in attendance. It was an honour to speak on behalf of the Stortford Against Rhodes campaign. Books teach history, statues and buildings glorify it and we should not celebrate the legacy of a man like Cecil Rhodes."
