Bypass Added to District Plan
A late modification to the East Herts District Plan looks like bringing a Hertford Bypass a step closer.
The new clause in the chapter covering the town states: "a bypass of the town and reassignment of one existing carriageway lane in each direction would enable prioritisation of sustainable transport modes and the ability for Hertford to become a Sustainable Travel Town. "

A bypass has been mooted a number of times but rejected on environmental grounds.
The most likely route would be south of the town from the A414 near Hertingfordbury to a junction either east of the town or near the Amwell roundabout.
However, critics have warned that any bypass would inevitably lead to increased housebuilding in the town as it would remove land from the green belt.
