Third Storey Proposed For Media House

Monday 9 April 2018

Developers are planning to add a third storey to Media House in Ware Road.

The iconic building, until recently the home of the Hertfordshire Mercury, was recently converted to flats

A revised planning application has now been submitted to add a third storey at the eastern end of the building.

Unlike its' twin building, occupied by Network Homes, the building is not listed, having been built some thirty years later. Both were built for the Addis company, the original in 1935 by Douglas Hamilton. It is an increasingly rare example of a streamlined 'moderne' design of 1930s industrial architecture.

The Hertfordshire Mercury occupied the building for over a decade before selling the site to developers and moving to offices at nearby Stag House. Trinity Mirror have since announced the closure of that office along with a number of redundancies. The local paper will in future be run from offices in Chelmsford, Essex.

Update: Planning permission was refused on 21st August 2018
