There are eleven churches in Hertford, ranging from the Norman St.Leonard's in Bengeo to the modern Methodist Church in Ware Road.

Some churches have been lost, including the medieval parish churches of St.Mary's, situated close to Old Cross, and St.Nicholas, across the river to the north of Maidenhead Street. Others include Christ Church n Port Vale, Christ's Hospital chapel in Ware Road, Port Vale Chapel and the Priory Church of St.John's.

Most of the town's churches are listed, the exceptions being the more modern buildings such as the Methodist Church or converted premises like those used by Hertford Town Church or the Plymouth Brethryn.

In places, Victorian churches have replaced much earlier churches that have fallen in to disrepair or been destroyed.

All Saints Church in Queen's Road is the largest church in Hertfordshire other than St.Albans Cathedral. The church can seat over 1000.
Holy Trinity Church in Bengeo Street was built in 1855 and superceded the Norman St.Leonard's
St.Leonard's Church dates back to around 1120 and is the oldest building in Hertford.
The United Reform Church in Cowbridge was built in 1862 by local builder Henry Norris.
St.Joseph's Church (Catholic) in St.John's Street was built in 1859-61 when St.John's and Priory Street were created.
Hertford Baptist Church in Cowbridge was built in 1905
The Plymouth Brethryn Christian Church can be found on the corner of Nelson Street and Molewood Road. The Brethryn Brethren dates back to the early nineteenth century in England where there was growing dissatisfaction within the Anglican Church.
St.Andrew's Church was built in 1869-70, replacing a smaller 15th century building that had fallen in to disrepair.
Hertford Methodist Church in Ware Road was built in 1963.
The Friends' Meeting House in Railway Street dates back to 1670. It is the oldest purpose-built Quaker meeting house still in use in the world.
Hertford Town Church in Hartham Lane was once used as a dance hall.
